Weekend Marathon for Ellen Pau: What About Home Affairs? — A Retrospective

In time to celebrate the new Year of the Pig, Para Site is delighted to present a weekend long marathon of events including panel discussions, a public tour, and a performance alongside the ongoing exhibition, Ellen Pau: What About Home Affairs? — A Retrospective.

At this panel, we invite three curators who have worked with Ellen Pau at different times and setups respectively to provide insights on the correlation between Pau’s practice throughout the past thirty years and the development of video art in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China, with particular focus on the late 80s and early 90s — the crucial formation period of Pau’s practice.

At this panel, we will explore how sisterhood and sexual orientation have made an impact on Pau’s practice, how they have become important aspects of her life, and how this personal experience can respond to or reflect upon the gender politics in contemporary Hong Kong society.

About the Panelists

Manray Hsu, an independent curator and art critic based in Taipei. He is co-founder and chairperson (2010-2012) of Taipei Contemporary Art Center, editor-in-chief of ArtCo Mainland China edition (2013-2014), has taught at National Taiwan University of Arts, National Tainan University of Arts, and National Taipei University of Education. Among various projects, Hsu has curated Naked Life (2006, with Maren Richter, MOCA Taipei), Liverpool Biennial in 2006 (with Gerardo Mosquera), 2008 Taipei Biennial (with Vasif Kortun), The South – An art of Asking and Listening, among others. In 2002, Hsu curated Dialog IV: How Big is the World? at O.K. Centrum für Gegenwartskunst in Linz, Austria which presented Pau’s Recycling Cinema single channel version.

 

Su Wei, art critic and curator at Inside-Out Art Museum in Beijing. In 2016, Su curated No References – A Revisit of Hong Kong Video and Media Art from 1985, taking the 30-year institutional history of Videotage as vantage point, with an attempt to look back and reflect the development of media art in Hong Kong with a critical historical perspective. Among various projects, Su has curated The 7th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale — Accidental Message: Art is Not a System, Not a world (2012), Epiphanies of a Modern Form in Escaped Totalities (2016), Self- Criticism (2017, with Carol Yinghua Liu and Luo Xiaoming).

 

Isaac Leung, an artist, curator, and scholar based in Hong Kong. In 2003, Leung received an Honorary Fellowship of a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the New Media Art Department of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2013, Leung was appointed as the Chairman of Videotage. During his tenure, he initiated and participated in projects include 40 Years of Video Art in Germany and Hong Kong (Hong Kong and Germany), The 12th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition (Italy and Hong Kong), ISEA Festival (Hong Kong, China), among others, He is currently Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Arts of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Petula, Sik Ying Ho is Professor in Social Work & Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong. Her main research interest is concerned about translating theoretical concepts into concrete social actions leading to a new concept of justice that focuses on “overlooked injustices” in the private sphere and intimate relationships include understanding political participation and personal life. She is the author of: I am Ho Sik Ying, 55 years old, and co-author of Everyday Life in the Era of Resistance and The Umbrella Politics Quartet.

 

Phoebe Wong is an independent researcher and writer based in Hong Kong. She is currently a member of the International Association of Art Critics, Hong Kong. She was the Head Researcher at Asia Art Archive until 2011, during which time, she took part in the major research project Materials of the Future: Contemporary Chinese Art in the 1980s, which launched worldwide in 2010. Her writings have been published in Asia Art Archive, Art Plus, Artforum China, and Ocula.
